TEMA is the acronym of the Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers' Association,
and the adjoining thumbnail views illustrate their standard designations for different
varieties of Shell-and-Tube construction.
These range from the popular and cost-efficient BEU to more involved
constructions that facilitate cleaning and repair, or can cope with severe operating conditions.
TEMA broadly classifies shell-and- tube units in three generic groups; Class-R
is used for especially severe conditions, e.g. in Petroleum Processing, and Class-C for more
moderate conditions. Class-B finds wide use in chemical processing service.
Among other types, Bowen is currently involved in the examination of the
Kettle Type Reboiler, a less usual construction, for an energy recovery project. "Therminol"
heat transfer media would be piped from a waste gas heat recovery unit, and used in the reboiler
to generate process steam, or possibly to operate a low-pressure steam turbine for electric power generation.
